The Stoning of Soraya M has not yet hit theaters, but believe me, this is one film that will not appear quietly and disappear without notice.  I attended a pre-release screening last night, and it reminded me of all the reasons I love film as an art form and as a medium of communication.  When it finally makes it to the theaters, people should line up to see this powerful, dramatic, and disturbing representation of a true story.

Wall Street Journal Op-Ed: The Path to Hysteria by Cyrus Nowrasteh

I am neither an activist, politician or partisan, nor an ideologue of any stripe. What I am is a writer who takes his job very seriously, as do most of my colleagues: Also, one who recently took on the most distressing and important story it will ever fall to me to tell. I considered it a privilege when asked to write the script for “The Path to 9/11.” I felt duty-bound from the outset to focus on a single goal–to represent our recent pre-9/11 history as the evidence revealed it to be. The American people deserve to know that history: They have paid for it in blood. Like all Americans, I wish it were not so. I wish there were no terrorists. I wish there had been no 9/11. I wish we could squabble among ourselves in assured security. But wishes avail nothing. more…

WGA: THE PATH TO 9/11 – Committing the Truth by Cyrus Nowrasteh

When I took on the assignment to write THE PATH TO 9/11 for ABC I knew it was the most important, and the most sensitive, project that I or any writer could tackle. For that reason, and because of a deeply-felt personal responsibility toward the story and those who died — indeed toward all Americans — I knew the research had to be impeccable. The 9/11 Commission Report, of course, was central, but other books were purchased, and many more referenced along with personal interviews, articles, and an array of consultants. An entire staff of lawyers viewed and reviewed every scene, every bit of dialogue and action, both in the writing process and after it was shot. I would venture to say that no movie or miniseries has ever been so carefully vetted, and hence, as accurate in its presentation of a story that covers 8 1/2 years, numerous continents, and two- hundred-and-sixty characters. more…

Wall Street Journal Op-Ed: A PATH TO 911 by Cyrus Nowrasteh

WALL STREET JOURNAL op-ed – Cyrus Nowrasteh

On September 10th and 11th, 2006, ABC aired the docudrama I wrote, The Path to 9/11, at the peak of a firestorm of political protest designed to discredit and shut down the miniseries even before it aired.  Left-leaning pundits and politicos and partisan bloggers waxed hysterical about its supposed inaccuracies and anti-Clinton bias, though the vast majority of them had not seen it – nor, they were determined, should anyone else see it either.  They failed, and the miniseries garnered nearly 28 million viewers and seven Emmy nominations. more…

Hollywood’s Revealing Censorship of “Path to 9/11”

“On television, at least “Twenty Four” has mustered the courage to highlight the dangers of Islamic terrorism (while also making a point of offering some Muslim heroes) but by far the most serious effort to portray the horrifying phenomenon of al Qaeda and Bin Ladenism remains the superb ABC mini-series, “The Path to 9/11,” which aired amid considerable controversy in September of 2006.” more…

LA Times: Is Clinton’s candidacy blocking ‘Path to 9/11’?

Among the nearly two dozen television DVDs slated for nationwide release on Sept. 11 is the second season of “Bones,” the third season of “Grey’s Anatomy” and the miniseries “The Starter Wife” that aired earlier this year. Not on the list on that day or any other in the near future is last year’s highly controversial “The Path to 9/11.”

The $40-million, five-hour ABC miniseries, which recently received seven Emmy nominations and drew a combined two-night audience of more than 25 million viewers, is for now on the path to nowhere. Its Amazon page reads: “Currently unavailable. We don’t know when or if this item will be back in stock.” more…
